The History of Our Building

Our shop is set within one of Skipton’s most historic buildings — the Old Town Hall, rebuilt in 1660 and located at the corner of High Street and Sheep Street. For centuries, this building stood at the heart of Skipton’s civic life.

The Courthouse Above

The upper floors of the building were once used as a courtroom, where local cases were heard and justice was carried out. These courts dealt with everyday disputes and minor criminal offences, long before modern courts and policing existed.

The Cells Below

Beneath the building, our cellar was originally used as the town jail (gaol). Prisoners were held here in stone cells, often in cold, damp conditions while awaiting their court hearing above. The space was basic and unforgiving, reflecting the harsh realities of justice at the time.

Today, parts of this original stonework remain, offering a rare glimpse into the building’s past.

The Stocks Outside

Outside the building, public stocks once stood on the High Street. These were used as a form of punishment and public humiliation for minor offences. Offenders would be locked in place and exposed to the town, serving as both punishment and deterrent.

Original stonework associated with the stocks is still visible today, marking the exact spot where this form of justice once took place.

A Building Marked by History

A historical plaque on the building records its role as Skipton’s courthouse and jail, recognising its importance in the town’s history and its place in daily life for hundreds of years.

From Justice to a New Chapter

While the building’s purpose has changed, its character and history remain very much alive. From courtroom and jail to its present-day use, the Old Town Hall continues to be part of Skipton’s story — and we’re proud to be adding a new chapter
